“The First Thing I Bought Was Sriracha…”

Given the recent catastrophic events (Tornadoes, Floods, Wildfires oh my!) I was recently posed the question:  “How do you make a new house feel like home?”  Not that I would consider myself a professional on these matters by any means.  Like the rest of the world, my heart beats for EVERYONE touched by these natural disasters.   However, I put an emphasis on you  [meaning me] because this person was particularly interested in my opinion.

A little background–  I spent almost a decade as an Insurance Underwriter and as such, am considered to have a unique perspective on the magnitude of financial and emotional devastation involved when nature attacks.   I am also a semi newlywed and my husband and I have lived in 9 cities in 4 states in the past 3 years.  Sometimes we moved by choice.  Sometimes, like the victims of the aforementioned events, not so much. In my opinion, the nesting instincts of a new wife are about 80% as strong as those of a pregnant woman.  If you know anything about the nesting instincts of a pregnant woman, this is like having 80% of  the strength of this guy. Simply put, It’s strong.

To be clear, I do not intend to undermine the severity of recent events, on the contrary I know all too well the amount of effort, energy and funding that will need to go into rebuilding.  However, when asked this question “How do you  make a new house feel like home?”  My answer was literally the title of this post: “The first thing I bought was Sriracha.”  I may be oversimplifying, of course we moved with furniture and clothing and other so-called necessities. But those are just things.  For me to find consistency in the chaos, I needed comfort which for me has always come with food (one of the reasons I married a Fitness and Nutrition expert but more on that later).  I am at peace in the kitchen.  I find serenity in the process of prepping ingredients.  I find comfort in tending to a pot bubbling on the stove.  I find love in placing a plate on the table in front of my husband.  No matter where we went, or how long it took to find, the first thing I bought was Sriracha.  (Thank God for Google. Asian markets in Huntersville, NC ??)

Sriracha is a spicy, complex, flavorful condiment based on the traditional chili sauces used throughout Sri Racha, Thailand.   Like most followers who have not been to Thailand, my first introduction was to the Huy Fong brand, the bottle in the featured image.  It is available in most supermarkets.  Bon Appetite did a wonderful rags-to-riches story on the founder of Huy Fong Foods, David Tran, which you can find here.  Since my initial initiation, I lean towards more authentic, preservative free varieties you can find in specialty asian markets but I still keep a bottle of the Huy Fong brand on hand.  Seeing it comforts me.  I pray that everyone who has ever lost anything can find comfort in something equally as easy to obtain.

On to the recipe

“Starkey Cocktail Sauce”

Mix 1/2 cup Ketchup plus 3-5 Tbls Sriracha (more or less depending on how much spice you like).

Add 2 Tbls Acid (I like Lemon Juice here but Red Wine or Apple Cider Vinegar work Just as well) then

Add 1 Tbls + 1 Tsp Honey (more or less to taste)

This sauce reminds me of summers in Staten Island with my family. Add a bushel of crabs and limitless ice cold Coronas and my sisters and I would sit by my parent’s pool laughing, talking, crab cracking and dipping all day.
